The Selangor state government in Malaysia has officially formed an eight member independent committee to investigate the natural gas pipeline explosion accident in the Putra Plateau in April this year.
According to the Xingzhou Daily, Nazwang, the administrative councilor in charge of youth and sports, corporate and disaster management affairs in Selangor, held a press conference at the state government building on Monday (September 29) and said that the main tasks of the committee include investigating the true cause of the gas explosion accident, evaluating whether relevant units are compliant, proposing improvement suggestions, and submitting a complete investigation report to the state government. The committee expects to submit the report within two months.
The federal government of Malaysia released an official investigation report in June this year, concluding that the gas explosion was not caused by intentional destruction or construction negligence, but by soil erosion leading to prolonged suspension and cracking of pipelines, and the leaked natural gas exploded due to metal friction.
Nazwang pointed out that the establishment of an independent committee by the state government to conduct an investigation is not to audit the results of the federal government's investigation, but to use the federal government's report as a reference to identify the cause of the accident and develop prevention rules, including requiring relevant units to develop relevant standard operating procedures to prevent similar accidents from happening again.
Nazwang said that the committee is composed of technical experts, scholars, and industry professionals, and there is no conflict of interest with the institutions involved.
On April 1st, a serious natural gas pipeline explosion occurred in the Butra Plateau of Selangor, affecting 469 houses and 225 vehicles. More than 100 people were injured, over 500 people lost their houses, and the economic losses amounted to RM65.4 million (approximately SGD 20.02 million). Fortunately, no one died.
