US Trade Representative Greer called the imposition of a 55% tariff on Chinese imports by the US a "good status quo," but the Trump administration also hopes to find areas for freer growth in bilateral trade.
Reuters reported that Greer's speech at the New York Economic Club on Tuesday (September 30) indicated that President Trump will not immediately lower tariffs on Chinese goods before the expiration of the US China trade ceasefire agreement on November 10.
Greer said, "If you ask the president, have we reached an agreement with China? He would say, 'Yes, we reached an agreement. I imposed a 55% tariff on them. That's our agreement.' So, this is a good situation
However, Greer also said that he hopes to continue regular consultations with Chinese officials and strive to achieve a more balanced bilateral trade relationship, so that both sides can increase trade in "non sensitive goods" such as US agricultural products and Chinese consumer goods.
Greer said, "One position I hope to reach with them is that we can trade, and trade in a freer and more transparent way. But for now, that's our current situation
The current situation referred to by Greer is that the United States currently imposes tariffs of up to 55% on Chinese goods, including the tariff rates imposed by Trump on China during his first term, while China imposes corresponding tariffs of over 10% on American imports.
