On the 25th local time, the police in Uttar Pradesh, India, uncovered a heinous dowry murder case. According to the Indian news agency ANI and the British newspaper The Independent, a 26 year old woman named Paila was burned alive by her husband Batti for failing to meet her husband's dowry requirements of 3.5 million rupees (approximately RMB 286000) and a luxury car. The Uttar Pradesh police stated that during the arrest process, Bati was injured in the leg by the police while attempting to escape. In addition, the police also arrested Bati's parents and their 28 year old brother as suspects.

According to reports, on the 21st local time, the local police received a report from a private hospital stating that the patient was a woman named Paila who suffered severe burns all over her body and died on her way to a hospital in Delhi. The local police said that initially, it appears that Peira was burned to death by a highly flammable substance. In addition, the police are investigating the murder case from multiple perspectives and have launched an investigation based on the suspected abuse video posted by the victim's sister on social media.

According to British media reports, the victim's family has accused Palira and her sister of long-term abuse and continuous dowry extortion since they married into the Bati family in 2016. Although the woman claimed to have been married with an off-road vehicle, a Royal Enfield motorcycle, and gold jewelry, the husband's family still demanded 3.5 million rupees in cash and a luxury car.

According to reports, after being arrested, Batti showed no remorse and even claimed to the media that "I have no regrets at all".

The Independent reported that data shows that between 2017 and 2022, India recorded an average of 7000 dowry related deaths per year, and the actual number may be higher.
