According to the Indian news agency ANI and the British newspaper The Independent, a 26 year old woman named Paila was burned alive by her husband Batti for failing to meet her husband's dowry requirements of 3.5 million rupees (approximately RMB 286000) and a luxury car. The Uttar Pradesh police stated that during the arrest process, Bati was injured in the leg by the police while attempting to escape. In addition, the police also arrested Bati's parents and their 28 year old brother as suspects.
According to reports, on the 21st local time, the local police received a report from a private hospital stating that the patient was a woman named Paila who suffered severe burns all over her body and died on her way to a hospital in Delhi.
