Indonesian President Prabowo appointed Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology Burian as Director General of the Mining Bureau on Monday (August 25th)
Indonesian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bakhrir said that Indonesia plans to have the government fully control rare earth resources. President Prabowo has established a mining bureau to assist in advancing this policy.
Bachrir told Indonesia's Antara News Agency on Monday (August 25th) that the management of rare earth resources will not be open to the public, but will be under the unified control of the country. However, relevant regulations are still being formulated.
Indonesia, which is rich in mineral resources, has been committed to increasing the added value of its mineral resources. This is an economic policy that former President Joko Widodo has been promoting since taking office, and now Prabowo continues this strategy.
According to Jakarta Globe, Prabowo appointed Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology Brian as the Director of the Mining Bureau on Monday.
After taking the oath of office, Burian said that the Mining Bureau will be responsible for regulating strategic resources closely related to national sovereignty, and related work can bring broader benefits to the Indonesian economy.
Bachriel said that the Ministry of Energy is responsible for managing rare earth raw materials, while the Mining Bureau focuses on industrial research, exploring how Indonesia can transform rare earth and other minerals into more refined and higher value-added products.
Secretary of State Prasetti said that this new institution will operate independently. This means that it is not under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources or the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology.
He said that Brian's dual role as Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology would help the government establish cooperative relationships with research institutions and universities.
Brian also said that the mining bureau will encourage universities to translate mineral related research into industrial applications. We look forward to strong technological investment so that the research and development achievements of universities can be further applied to practical industries
